Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI Day is celebrated on 9th January every year. This day when Mahatma Gandhi returned to Mumbai, India from South Africa. It should be noted that this event happened in 1915. Now, the day is also celebrated to honour the contribution made by Non-Resident Indian citizens towards our country’s development. Back in 2003, NRI Day was first observed in our country. 

As per the latest reports, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed from January 7th to 9th January. The celebration includes organising an award ceremony in the desired city of India where awards are distributed. Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards are signed by the President of India to NRIs or any institution established by NRIs in order to honour their achievements as well as their contribution in their respective fields in overseas and India.

Every year, the Ministry of External Affairs comes up with a new theme in order to honour the day more effectively. This year, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2023 theme is “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal.”. Its emphasis is on highlighting the importance of NRI towards the development of our country.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas hold great significance towards the overall development of our country. It is the day that honours the hardworking citizens of India that work in foreign countries and helps in increasing India’s GDP. It gives the government a chance to acknowledge and resolve the issues faced by them while working in a foreign land. PBD convention help in resolving such issues. They have created a network of all the NIs across the globe while connecting the youth with the settled immigrants so they can reach out to them if they face any issues in a foreign land.
