International Mountain Day is celebrated on 11th December every year. The main aim of this celebration is to highlight the global community of mountaineers. It shows the importance of mountains in people’s lives as well as in nature. 

Initially, back in 2003, International Mountain Day or World Mountain Day was first recognised on 11th December. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, Agenda 21, Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development of Chapter 13 in 1992 was adopted. Instantly it got a lot of attention from travellers around the world. It made them realize the importance of mountains in nature. After seeing much appreciation from people across the globe. So, the United Nations General Assembly made the year 2002 the “United Nations International Year of Mountains”. Also in 2003, World Mountain Day was declared on 11th December. 

Every year, the UN come up with new themes in order to celebrate the day in full swing. This year’s theme is  ‘Women Move Mountains. Last year in 2021, the theme was ‘Sustainable Mountain Tourism. In 2022, the aim is to highlight the relevance of mountain tourism in the world as it gathers 15 to 20% of global tourism.
